Our Newest Barn Wood Piece The Barn Wood Heritage Table is made from all authentic barn wood claimed from ancient barns in the Midwest near our Waseca, Minnesota wood shop. We made this piece upon the request of a customer who was referred to us by his brother, who had purchased several pieces of barn wood furniture from us last year. We were happy to custom make a new style of barn wood table that is a lot like our other barn wood tables, but with a few different details. This table has bread board ends and features a trestle base that is a well known, vintage style from the past. We put our own spin on it and were happy to have the opportunity! Rustic Log Curved Staircase

Recently we crafted this curved log staircase for a customer in Wisconsin. They were very happy with the results, as it added a nice touch to their already beautiful log home. The entire rustic log staircase was constructed with heavy duty northern white cedar, and finished with several coats of clear catalyzed lacquer.

We can provide many different types of rustic staircases, in all type of styles. Different types of logs can be used such as cedar, bark on hickory, as well as dimensional lumber including reclaimed barn wood and oak.

This has been the busiest summer in the history of our company, and we have our amazing customers to thank for that! People from all over the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada and even New Zealand have come to us for their reclaimed wood furniture and log furniture needs. We've been especially busy building reclaimed wood kitchens that varied from rustic styles to more refined. Another popular one has been the rustic hickory kitchen. These styles are so versatile that they have been installed in cabins, lake homes, and even apartments in New York City! Since antique barn wood is so beautiful when it is run through a planer, it can be used to make not only beautiful looking solid wood furniture, but also some amazing interior doors. Reclaimed wood interior doors are another product that we are constantly building. We can not make them fast enough! Even after hiring additional staff, we have had to run over time all summer long. It's been crazy here at Vienna Woodworks LLC, but it's been a good crazy!

This recent video of Heidi's in Minneapolis gives a glimpse of the furniture that Vienna Woodworks made for the upscale establishment. We have built furniture for restaurants and hotels all over the United States as well as Canada, and this is our latest commercial project. We have also built hospitality furniture for several hotels and resorts, and we are currently working on rustic restaurant booths for our latest commercial furniture order. The furniture we built for Heidi's was made from reclaimed wood, however many of our projects also include hickory and white cedar log. All is commercial grade.

Country Style Furniture

Recently I was thinking about our furniture lines, and the new ones that we plan to add in 2011. We have catered to those with log homes, cabins, lake houses, cottages, and those who have contemporary homes with basements or dens that are decked out in a more rustic theme. Our furniture has also appealed to those with a more country decor so I decided to focus on this opportunity in the upcoming year.

There is a variety of furniture that is found in cottages and houses that are decorated in a country theme, and while some of our existing pieces can be quite easily adapted to this setting, we will be adding a line that will provide our customer base with several more options.

Our reclaimed wood antique vanity on the diy network show Bath Crashers

Vienna Woodworks worked with the diy Network to help with remodeling an outdated bathroom. We were contacted by one of the directors of the Bath Crashers series, and asked to provide a bathroom vanity, linen closet and two medicine cabinets in an antique style. What we came up with can be viewed on our website under antique bathroom vanities or on the diy network on Bath Crashers "Beach cottage get away." The full episode is also available on the diy network website for anyone who would like to watch on their computer.

The beauty of reclaimed barn wood furniture is showcased along with the wood crafting skills of Chris when he comes up with the finished product. All of the furniture made by Vienna Woodworks can be shipped across the United States as well as to Canada.

This week we are working on our next bathroom vanity project for another episode of Bath Crashers! Chris was asked by diy to provide another set of bathroom cabinets, and this one although different from the first set, will also be made entirely of reclaimed barn wood.

It has been almost a decade of log furniture creations for us here at Vienna Woodworks! We started out in Superior, Wisconsin and are now located in Waseca, MN. While the two locations are quite different, the beauty of the Midwest continues to inspire us on a daily basis.
The Superior, WI location, especially along Lake Superior's North and South Shores, is something that we will always cherish. The rolling hills, abundance of pine trees and the atmosphere of Lake Superior is difficult to describe, and is one of my very favorite places in the whole world! As a matter of fact Chris and I often talk about retiring to Bayfield, Wisconsin when we are ready to go back to creating rustic pieces as a hobby rather than run the busy shop we now have in order to support our three (now teenage) children.
We started making simple log beds along with case goods to go with our bedroom furniture such as log dressers and from there our collection has grown. We now make bent branch log beds, log slab beds, and a few other variations that are unique and a little fancier. There are also four different styles of log bunk beds that we do. All of these can be seen in our store site and our rustic gallery.
The Waseca location has grown quite a bit, especially in the last two years. We have added a lot of space to our shop, finishing room, lumber and log storage, and shipping area. Waseca is a farming community, and has it's own unique inspiration. A big part of that is the barn wood furniture that we began building about three years ago, and this collection of reclaimed furniture has been the driving force behind our incredible growth. We still get a lot of requests for our log pieces however, and have expanded the collection to include juniper and hickory log furniture as well.
Our northern white cedar log furniture is still one of our most popular lines which includes furniture for every room, along with log mirrors, log lamps, and log staircases. We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic customer base throughout the United States and Canada, and it is very fulfilling to know that others share our love of unique pieces of furniture that are hand made to order.

After all of our years building rustic furniture, it's become obvious that our most popular product is our rustic vanity. We have built many different styles and variations of vanities for customers all over the United States, and started with a rustic cedar vanity, then a cedar log vanity and eventually added a barnwood vanity. The barnwood vanity has evolved into several different styles, from weathered gray to vessel style to cross buck. In addition to this, we also make styles in cherry and oak, pine, reclaimed fence wood, butternut, and our now in demand Adirondack Bathroom Vanity. These bathroom cabinets come in all different sizes and styles, drawers and doors can be custom configured, and they come with or without a wooden top.

Our standard drawer boxes are constructed from birch, with dovetail drawer boxes available as an upgrade. All drawers are made with metal drawer slides. In most areas of the country, bathroom vanities do not customarily come with backs. We can add a back if a customer requests this, however, it is often much easier to install plumbing if the back is left open. This also makes plumbing easier to maintain over the years.

Our prices are reasonable! We have had inquiries where potential customers have expressed concerns about the quality of our furniture due to our reasonable prices - however we can assure you that our furniture is well constructed, durable and visually appealing. Why are our prices lower than most? Because we work hard to keep our overhead low, and in today's economy, our goal is to provide value. A fair price for a quality piece of furniture!

Most of the time we do our best to make our customers happy, and most of the time our customers are fantastic about waiting. When we hear other companies boasting about being "the biggest" or "the best" or even "the most elegant line of rustic furniture available" we cringe! As a consumer, I personally get very turned off when companies make these types of claims. There are many many talented artisans and furniture designers out there. Each has their own unique flair that becomes imposed upon their work. I think that to make claims that are so outrageous in order to gain sales reflects upon the person selling the furniture, and while it is understandable that a person wants to gain business from prospective customers, they should be realistic in representing their work.

We may not be the biggest or the best, but we guarantee your satisfaction, and our goal is to build you a custom piece of rustic furniture that will last a life time, and above all we want to provide you with exactly what you are looking for. We have the ability to do this, and will work closely with you to accomplish this.

We have available our newest rustic products, our log reindeer and twig christmas tree to spruce up your rustic decor. Both products come in small, medium and large sizes. The holiday log deer pictured is made with a 12 inch log for the body, 12 inch legs, and the head and antlers are approx. 12 inches. The tree is 2 feet high, and is an interesting collection of twigs that will provide very unique decorative piece!

Barn Wood Dresser, Four Drawer

Part of our weekend delivery, this four drawer reclaimed barnwood dresser turned out quite nicely. I was very happy with the work that Chris and the helpers in the shop did on this piece. The pulls really make the piece in my opinion. Of course that's just my opinion, and I am sure there are many other choices out there for pulls that would look fantastic as well.

One of my current projects is to create a hardware sample board, where I would be able to enable customers to better visualize how different types of hardware would look on their drawer fronts and doors. I hope to have this project completed by the end of 2009, so that we can better serve our customers and help them make more informed purchasing choices.

We always welcome the ideas of our customers and many of them have discovered hardware that has complemented our reclaimed furniture pieces so well. We have really enjoyed the part of customer service that allows us to work together with our customers to provide them with pieces that are unique and that allow them to provide input which really makes them our design partners. Based on the results, we often have extremely happy customers who express their satisfaction to us when the final product is delivered.

Reclaimed Barnwood Doors

This weekend's delivery consisted of several pieces of furniture as well as a number of reclaimed barnwood interior doors. These barnwood doors are all pre-hung and ready to be installed, with hinges included. We make it convenient for our customers, and work with them to pick out hinges that they prefer to use in their rustic decor.

Doors can be custom made to fit any size door opening, and different styles are available as well. Most customers provide us with sketches if they want something different, and we are more than happy to comply.

As with all of our reclaimed wood furniture, our doors are sanded smooth, however, we try to leave as much rustic character in them as possible. The majority of the reclaimed wood that we work with is heart pine from barns and buildings that are over a century old. Heart pine is very dense, unlike the new pine that is found in today's lumber yards. This makes it much harder, allowing it to withstand the test of time. The rings in this old wood are very close together, which is why it is a harder wood than modern pine, and is also why this wood looks very much like nothing that you will ever find in the future. It would take hundreds of years of growing to produce anything that would come even close to resembling this beautiful and rare wood.

Reclaimed wood is a piece of the past, and it is very satisfying to be able to salvage a part of history and transform it into something that will live on for future generations.

Recently we took down a barn right here in Waseca, MN, just minutes from our shop. This will allow us to continue to create our reclaimed wood furniture from this antique barnwood. This barn was built circa 1932 according to the land owner who lived on this property when she was a child. There is a lot of great wood here. In the next few days, we will be able to post some pictures of the wood close up but for now we thought we would show you the fun video that our friend Ed took of the frame coming down.

We have our trailers packed full with several loads of these old barnboards, and a few more loads to go until the whole works is cleaned up. Most of the barn wood which is heart pine, is in fantastic shape! Chris keeps talking about what he is going to make in the shop with all of this wood, so stay tuned for some new pictures of his latest furniture creations.

Chris also has a lot of orders currently, so our turn around time right now is approx 4-6 weeks, however this also will depend on the size of the order and other variables such as the actual project requested.

OUR NEW LOG BUNK BED STYLE

Our new log bunk bed style (picture 2 & 3) is an option that we can offer to customers who want bunk beds with a rail that has vertical spindles rather than the horizontal logs or dimensional wood guards. We still make all three versions, with the rail style available for an upcharge.

My husband Chris, the owner of Vienna Woodworks Rustic Furniture Co in Waseca, MN loves making these bent branch beds or twig beds as they are sometimes called. Chris does not like calling these beds twig beds because he feels that the word "twig" does not truly represent them, as thicker, stronger bent braches are actually used. He goes through our Very Large pile of logs and bent branches and selects the parts, and as he describes it, puts them together, like a puzzle. Building rustic furniture takes more than just knowing how to run equipment and follow a plan. There is a great deal of creativity and artistic talent involved in making unique pieces of furniture that are not only pleasant to the eye but also functional and well crafted. More often than not, the end result is the product of his vision and internal planning. Besides using standard measurements for certain pieces of rustic furniture, there usually are no paper plans involved. Chris' blend of talents for both creativity and building furniture have resulted in some products that have a very natural look to them. Here you will find several of the different ways that these beds can be constructed. We have many unique rustic furniture pieces in the gallery.

All beds are made to be safe, strong and sturdy, and complete sets come with side rails that easily snap together to join headboard and footboard. They are first buffed and sanded to be smooth and beautiful, and once carefully assembled and tested for safety, finished with several clear coats of furniture grade catalyzed lacquer to protect and enhance the natural grain and knots in the wood. If you want to use a box spring, that won't be a problem at all. However, it is not necessary to use one as we can provide you with the slats that will support your mattress as well. We also provide a mattress support for queen, king and california king sizes, which addes extra support to the middle portion of the mattress.

It is also possible to purchase the log headboard only, so if you would like to go with this option, just let us know and we will provide you with a price quote. The headboards can be easily attached to a traditional bed frame, which has been a popular option for many resorts and hotels that we have worked with in the past.

Reclaiming a part of the past

We are in the process of taking down this barn in Waseca, MN, which was built in 1919. The roof is leaking, and the structure is compromised, so rather than let this piece of history deteriorate any further, we are taking it down piece by piece in order to save the beautiful old wood.

This wood will be stored in our storage facility so that we can use it to continue building the many different pieces of furniture that we have been creating in our shop.
Last week while we were taking off the shingles, a man stopped by and told us that he would like us to take his old barn down before winter. It's pretty exciting to be able to have such local access to this beautiful wood. Although it is a lot of work, it is time well spent!

Our collection of barn wood furniture is growing every week, and will hopefully continue to grow based on the many requests for custom orders that we receive. We have done several barnwood kitchen cabinet projects this summer, and have also been working on a few reclaimed wood flooring projects in addition to the other rustic furniture that we are currently building.

Barn Wood Bunk Bed from Reclaimed Fence Wood

The barnwood bunk bed pictured is made from reclaimed fence wood. In our efforts to be a green company, we have been using salvaged wood from various sources in Minnesota in order to build sturdy furniture that is appealing and rustic. None of the wood that we use is treated lumber! We recently had a customer who was concerned about our wood being treated, however, we can assure you that we never use treated lumber for our furniture. Even the barn wood that we use is not treated, as it is over 100 years old, and is primarily from the interior of old barns. We carefully inspect all wood to ensure that it has never been treated, and we sand and buff all of the "dirt" off as well.

Of course we can't speak for other companies out there who are using reclaimed fence wood as to whether or not their lumber is treated but at Vienna Woodworks Rustic Furniture Co, we can tell you that this is not the case. Making sure that our wood is healthy and sturdy is extremely important. While it may look rustic, it is also completely sturdy or we do not use it.

We also have rustic bunkbeds that are made from hickory log and white cedar log. We are not limited to just these wood species though. If you want oak or pine for example, we can make them out of those woods as well. In addition, the style that you see pictures can be modified to suit your personal preference. Just say the word and we'll make it!

As a matter of fact, we were just recently asked to modify our log cedar bunk beds, so check back in a week or so, because I'll be posting the new pictures here. Made One Piece At A Time By Hand

One factor that keeps our rustic furniture unique is that it is hand made. Building furniture by hand, one piece at a time enables us to provide pieces that are one of a kind. While we follow a basic design for each piece of furniture, no two are completely alike. If we were to mass produce our furniture, we would have to run the logs through a big machine, and turn them into large dowels that would all be exactly alike. Creating "machined" log furniture doesn't fit our vision of what log furniture or rustic furniture really is. Above photo is Chris - owner, builder and Dad

It is less artistic, has little to no character, and is what we consider to be "cookie cutter" furniture. Removing all of the beauty of nature leaves a much more sterile look to the logs.

Don't get me wrong, there are companies that are mass producing log furniture in this manner, and they make a great product. In addition, you can find it all over the internet and in many stores and shops across the country. It is priced to sell, and it does. For those who like a plainer, (no pun intended) less rutic look, machined made log furniture is an excellent option. Price wise, it is quite economical. In addition, this type of rustic furniture can be made very quickly, reducing turn around times significantly.

This is not the case for our hand made, high end rustic furniture. Our lead times are anywhere from 4-6 weeks during the winter months, and 6-8 weeks during our busy season from March to October. Most customers are willing to wait for hand made to order furniture. We don't carry an inventory (however we have started to pre build and stock some of the basic components used to build some of our more common pieces) due to the fact that many people have custom requests when they order from us. Nine times out of ten, our customers ask us to build them something that varies slightly from the examples that can be found on our website. Having this option available has given us the opportunity to create pieces that are designed by us together with our customers, which creates a much more personal service to them. This is something that we love being able to do, and we would not want it any other way!

It has been an extremely busy spring and summer, and our lead times have crept up to the 8-10 week turn around time. The majority of our customers appreciate what we are able to provide for them at much lower prices than our direct competition, and they have been acceptionally understanding (for the most part). I don't know of any company large or small that is immune from back order situations, and of course we are no exception to this. It's something that all companies deal with. Some of our suppliers for crib hardware, pool table pockets and bed brackets have also been faced with these parts being on back order as well, which in turn has directly effected our turn around time this spring.

As we have grown as a company this year, we have had our three children helping in the shop from time to time, and have also had as many as five contractors working with us in our shop to crank out some of the larger furniture orders that our wholesale division has produced. We have also put on a large addition to our shop, which was very necessary to have the room to run our various machines and do the finishing. In addition we added on to our show room and lumber storage areas.

It has been exciting, rewarding and stressful! Do we still enjoy what we do? Absolutely. Are there days that we wonder why we decided to go full time building custom hand made rustic furniture? I would be lying if I said no. But for the most part, we are (on a smaller scale) going through the exact same growing pains and situations as any other company.

Our customers are the reason that we love our jobs here at Vienna Woodworks Rustic Furniture. So let me take this opportunity to thank each and every one of those who trusted us to build them furniture that they love. We have yet to have any unsatisfied customers - when it comes to the furniture itself. When it comes to the turn around time, and the drop ship delivery situation, most have been quite patient and understanding. There are always exceptions to this, which is why I practically beg and plead that people read our http://www.viennawoodworks.com/rustic-furniture-terms-conditions.html terms and conditions before they place an order, so that they will have accurate and reasonable expectations. Remember folks, 6-8 weeks is a guideline during the busy season, and delays do happen. We care about each and every order, and do everything possible to build your furniture as quickly as possible. While I despise having to have such strict and impersonal guidelines on our terms and conditions page, I do so in order to be as upfront as possible, and also because my attorney told me I have to! Although I have yet to see any company be sued for having a product on back order due to unforeseen delays or delayed delivery times due to weather, accidents or traffic!! As I say at the end of that very long winded terms and conditions page, we strive to do all that we can to be as fair and accommodating as possible. Our customers are why we exist, and we truly value them, no matter how large or small the order they place.

Our family strives to keep our business personal, to provide the best value possible by building reasonably priced high quality rustic furniture, to fulfill customer expectations to the best of our ability and to be as accommodating as possible. Recently we had a customer who said that our furniture was well worth the wait. Comments like that are what makes what we do so incredibly satisfying!

We started Vienna Woodworks in 2002 up in Superior, WI, and now operate the shop from Waseca, MN, but Chris has been building furniture all of his life. Once he started making rustic log furniture, he knew that he had found his niche.

We have now added barnwood furniture to our product line, and plan to add many more pieces soon. Our supply of 100+ year old barnwood comes from barns that are taken down near our shop - and we have a huge supply of materials to work with!This has been a very exciting year for us, as our company has grown and we want to thank all of our loyal customers for making this possible!
